Secretome Therapy in Nashville

Learn about secretome research, exosomes, potential risks, regulatory considerations, and the questions to discuss with a physician.

Understanding Secretome Therapy

Are you researching alternative solutions for chronic pain, arthritis, ALS, ASD, heart injuries, brain injuries, or other health concerns? The secretome is something you may be eager to learn more about.

When it comes to providing regenerative options for chronic health concerns, Vita Nova is a leader in stem cell therapy, including the use of secretome-based therapies. Vita Nova’s physician-guided work is known throughout Nashville, Middle Tennessee, and across the country.

What Is the Secretome?

It is the powerhouse. In regenerative medicine, the secretome is often described as the “paracrine powerhouse” behind many of the potential benefits associated with stem cell therapies.

Scientifically speaking, the secretome is the complete set of bioactive molecules and factors secreted by cells into their surrounding environment. The particular cells involved are known as mesenchymal stromal or stem cells, commonly referred to as MSCs.

The secretome includes growth factors, cytokines, chemokines, proteins, extracellular vesicles such as exosomes, and other signaling molecules.

Rather than the cells themselves integrating into and replacing tissue long-term, they release factors that may modulate inflammation, promote tissue repair, support angiogenesis, or new blood vessel formation, enhance cell survival and proliferation, and help restore homeostasis.

Here is what you need to know:

  • The secretome acts as a sophisticated communication network that helps orchestrate healing without requiring the cells themselves to persist. This helps explain why the secretome is often viewed as a powerhouse behind many of the potential benefits associated with stem cell therapies.
  • Secretome-based approaches are considered cell-free, or acellular, options. In certain contexts, they may offer advantages related to safety, standardization, and ease of delivery when compared with live-cell therapies.
  • At Vita Nova, we emphasize high-quality, well-characterized preparations, including partnerships with suppliers such as PranaGen Bioscience for advanced cell factors and secretome products. These preparations may support therapies such as intranasal applications for neurological conditions.

How Is Secretome Therapy Being Studied?

Secretome therapy research is ongoing and explores its potential in several areas.

Orthopedic Conditions

In orthopedic conditions such as osteoarthritis, researchers are studying whether the secretome may help reduce inflammation and support cartilage health. Much of this research currently involves animal models and veterinary trials.

Neurological Conditions

Research also includes neurological conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD. Intranasal delivery of MSC-derived secretome products or exosomes has shown promise in animal models for improving social behavior, reducing repetitive actions, and modulating neuroinflammation. Human studies involving related macrophage secretome or MSC products are emerging and are exploring potential language and behavioral improvements.

Other Areas of Research

Additional research is examining anti-inflammatory effects in joint models, potential applications in neurodegenerative conditions, and broader regenerative uses. Research highlights the secretome’s potential ability to influence pathways such as NF-κB for inflammation control, neurotrophic factors for neural support, and immune modulation. Delivery methods, including intra-articular, intravenous, and intranasal administration, may be tailored to the intended target. While the research is promising, many applications remain investigational. Ongoing work is needed to improve standardization, conduct larger clinical trials, and clarify regulatory pathways. Vita Nova stays current with this evolving science to provide transparent, evidence-guided options.

Cellular Signaling

Researchers are studying how MSC-derived signals interact with nearby tissue and what role they may play in the body's repair response.

Exosome Function

Exosomes carry RNA and other molecules that may influence how nearby cells behave. Their exact role is an active area of research.

Anti-Inflammatory Signals

Some of the proteins in the secretome are being studied for a possible role in reducing local inflammation.

EARLY CLINICAL RESEARCH

Secretome-based products have been examined in early-stage human research. These studies can help evaluate feasibility and safety, but they do not establish an FDA-approved treatment.

Advancing and Applying the Science

Dr. Ramon Coronado

Physicians and researchers such as Dr. Ramon Coronado, CEO of CubicBio and co-founder of Crown Scientific, have advanced the science behind secretome-based therapies. This work includes published research on extracellular vesicles derived from mesenchymal stromal cells.

Dr. Coronado holds a Ph.D. in stem cell research and tissue engineering from UT San Antonio. He has also served as an adjunct professor at Baylor College of Medicine and UT Health San Antonio.

Dr. Hemal V. Mehta, MD

Dr. Hemal V. Mehta, MD

Dr. Mehta is board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or PM&R, and has completed fellowship training in Interventional Spine and Pain Medicine.

His field sits at the intersection of non-surgical orthopedics, neurology, and sports medicine. It encompasses the systems involved in human movement, including bones, muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, nerves, the spinal cord, the brain, and cardiovascular function.

With 25 years of clinical practice, Dr. Mehta spent the first phase of his career treating acute and chronic pain through conventional interventional methods.

Over time, he recognized a troubling pattern: the typical endpoint for many chronic pain patients was long-term opioid medication. For Dr. Mehta, that was not an acceptable outcome.

That realization led him toward regenerative medicine. When he began integrating regenerative therapies into his practice, he saw patients who had relied on opioid pain medications begin reducing or discontinuing them as their function improved.

That clinical experience became part of the foundation for Vita Nova.
