What Are Muse Cells?
Muse cells (Multilineage-differentiating Stress Enduring cells) are a naturally occurring stem cell type first identified in 2010 by Dr. Mari Dezawa’s research team at Tohoku University.
They are identified by a specific surface marker (SSEA-3⁺). Research describes muse cells as responding to signals released by stressed or damaged tissue and migrating toward that tissue after entering the bloodstream.
The deepest research base so far is in areas such as cardiac recovery, stroke, and neurological injury.
How Are Muse Cells Being Studied?
Scientists have examined muse cells through laboratory research, animal models, and early-stage human studies.
Research has looked at what these cells are, how they endure cellular stress, how they respond to biological signals, and how they behave after administration.
Stress Endurance
The name “muse” refers in part to the cells’ ability to endure stressful biological conditions. Scientists are still investigating what this behavior means.
Cellular Signaling
Research is exploring how muse cells detect and respond to signals within their environment. These mechanisms are proposed and require continued study. They should not be taken as guaranteed clinical effects.
Early Clinical Research
