What is a stem cell?
A stem cell is a cell that can support repair and help maintain tissue. Unlike most cells, stem cells can release signals that help coordinate the body’s own repair response. Regenerative therapy uses those biological signals, not surgery, to support joints, soft tissue, and other conditions your physician reviews with you
How does stem cell therapy work?
When regenerative cells or cell-derived products are delivered to an affected area, they release growth factors that may help calm inflammation and support the body’s natural repair process. Your physician reviews imaging, history, and goals before recommending any option.
Where do the cells and products come from?
The source depends on the therapy your physician recommends. Some protocols use cells or blood products collected from you. Others use donor-derived regenerative products. We do not default to one source. The recommendation is based on your condition, imaging, and treatment goals, and it is reviewed with you before anything is scheduled.
Is stem cell therapy FDA-approved?
Most stem cell and regenerative therapies are not FDA-approved. Tennessee law allows a physician to perform stem cell or regenerative medicine therapy that is not FDA-approved when it is within that physician’s scope of practice, with required notice and written consent.
What to Expect
Is stem cell therapy done in the office?
Yes. Procedures are performed in our Franklin, Tennessee office by our clinical team. Delivery is image-guided, with ultrasound or fluoroscopy, so the product is placed at the intended site rather than injected by site alone.
Does stem cell therapy hurt?
Most patients describe pressure and a brief sting, not surgical pain. Our team takes measures to ensure you are comfortable. Harvest procedures, when one is part of your plan, are explained before the day of treatment so you know what to expect.
How long does the procedure take?
Most in-office treatments take about one to two hours, including procedure preparation. Some of our protocols are a single visit. Others are scheduled across two appointments. You will know which one applies after your consultation.
When will I see results from stem cell therapy?
Every patient is different. Some patients notice a reduction in symptoms within a few weeks. Others need two to three months, and a smaller group needs longer. Early relief is often from lower inflammation. Tissue-level change, if it happens, takes longer. We set that range at the consultation so the patient has a realistic timeline of what to expect.
What is recovery like?
Most people can return to their normal daily activities within a few days. We usually limit high-impact activity for a couple of weeks during the acute healing phase, with a guided plan to introduce more vigorous activity when the time is right. Our procedures are outpatient and require limited downtime.
Is stem cell therapy safe?
All medical procedures carry risk, including temporary soreness, swelling, and, less often, infection or a reaction. We review those risks in writing before treatment.
Cost and Insurance
How much does stem cell therapy cost?
Each protocol is custom to the patient’s specific care needs. We discuss cost and options for your plan at the consultation, before you decide. There is no charge for the examination.
Does insurance cover stem cell therapy?
Usually no. Most regenerative procedures are not covered by insurance. Some patients use HSA or FSA funds. We also accept CareCredit as a payment option.

All procedures are performed by Dr. Mehta and the Vita Nova clinical team in the Franklin office.
