A2M Therapy

Alpha-2-Macroglobulin for joint protection

Understanding A2M

Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (A2M) is a naturally occurring protein found in your blood. This large molecule acts as a master inhibitor of destructive enzymes called proteases. In joint conditions like osteoarthritis, elevated levels of these proteases contribute to cartilage breakdown—the progressive destruction that characterizes degenerative joint disease.

Proteases like matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play important roles in normal tissue remodeling, but when their activity becomes excessive, they can cause significant damage. In arthritic joints, the balance between tissue breakdown and repair shifts toward destruction.

A2M’s natural role is to capture and neutralize these destructive enzymes, protecting tissues from enzymatic damage. However, A2M is a large molecule that doesn’t easily penetrate into joints in sufficient concentrations.

How It Works

How A2M Therapy Works

A2M therapy involves drawing a blood sample, processing it to concentrate the A2M protein, and injecting this concentrated solution directly into the affected joint. Because A2M comes from your own blood, there are no concerns about rejection or allergic reactions.

The goal is to deliver high concentrations of this protective protein directly where destructive enzymes are active—potentially helping to slow cartilage breakdown and support joint health.

Treatment

Conditions We Address

A2M therapy may be appropriate for patients with joint conditions involving cartilage breakdown, including knee osteoarthritis, hip osteoarthritis, and shoulder joint degeneration. A2M therapy may be used alone or in combination with other regenerative approaches.

Expectation

What to Expect

During your consultation, we evaluate whether A2M therapy may be appropriate for your specific condition. The procedure is relatively straightforward. Most patients tolerate it well, experiencing mild discomfort during injection. Response timelines vary.
